Friend or Foe

Friend or Foe

著:Imani Black

Detective Simpson must navigate the seedy underworld to find a killer before more bodies start piling up. But first, he must fight off the demons of his past and decide where his loyalties lie—with the NYPD, or with the hood he grew up in.

When former drug kingpin Keith “Big K” Turner is released from prison after serving sixteen years, things aren’t as they once were. Not only has the neighborhood he once reigned over changed; his entire family has changed as well. When his wife, Desiree, is found murdered, all fingers point to Big K’s enemies in the streets. But that may be just
the way the killer wants it to seem.

When Detective Brice Simpson, the newly dubbed “hood detective” takes the case, he sets out to find the killer just like with any other case. But Detective Simpson soon finds himself up against some of the hood’s most dangerous people, some of whom he grew up with. With his loyalties being tested, Detective Simpson soon realizes that no matter how street smart he is, no one in the hood can be eliminated as a suspect in Desiree’s murder.

With a list of suspects that include a husband, a daughter, a son, and some of the most dangerous street enemies, Detective Simpson will have his work cut out for him. Will he survive, or will someone try to eliminate him before he gets too close to the truth?

During the Second World War, there were over 100 instances of naval engagements between ships, submarines and aircraft of the same side. In the past there has often been a reluctance by the authorities to admit to these losses but with operational records now available, it is possible for historians to explain how a good number of ships and submarines were attacked, damaged or sunk by the forces of their own side.

Friend or Foe?

著:Luke Lloyd

Rick had served in Iraq, written extensively about Islam and Arab nations, and risen to the rank of colonel in the Army Reserve—but he never expected to be thrown in the middle of an operation sparked by his own friend’s murder by ISIS.

Rick’s friend, Ramzi, was brutally murdered, his body put on gruesome display in Egypt, all perhaps in retaliation for converting from Islam to Christianity. He had seen the underbelly of Islam, and decided following Christ was what his heart and soul needed to be free. He saw that it was less of a religion as it was a political movement—one with goals and policies he did not want to follow. And for this, he lost his life. His father lost a son. His wife lost a husband. His children lost a father.

As Rick comes to terms with his friend’s death, it becomes apparent that it is a symptom of a much larger problem that he must face. Will he find Ramzi’s murderers and bring them to appropriate justice in a culture that sees apostates as deserving of such an end? Will he be able to orchestrate an operation to subvert a planned drone attack in the U.S.

Luke Lloyd was trained as a Middle East specialist while serving in the U.S. Army.  He holds an M.A. in Arab Studies from the American University in Beirut, Lebanon.  Later he lived and worked in Saudi Arabia, & Egypt.  U.S. assignments included the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the Office of the Joint Chief of Staff (OJCS) in the Pentagon as well as the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force (RDJTF) that later became the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) at MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Florida where he retired.

He has taught off and on at his church and at his Continuing Care Facility, Freedom Plaza, where he has resided since 2001.  He has also been a frequent speaker in the Sun City Center, Florida area and has previously published two educational novels: Out of Darkness in 2009 and Baffling Puzzle in 2012.

Friend or Foe

著:Nils Hägerdal

When civil conflicts break out in plural societies, violence often occurs along group divides—running the risk of spiraling into ethnic cleansing. Yet for militants who do not seek ethnic separation as a political goal, indiscriminate attacks are detrimental to their cause. Under what circumstances are such combatants more or less likely to commit ethnic violence?

Nils Hägerdal examines the Lebanese civil war to offer a new theory that highlights the interplay of ethnicity and intelligence gathering. He shows that when militias can obtain reliable intelligence—particularly in demographically intermixed areas where information can cross ethnic boundaries—they are likely to refrain from indiscriminate tactics. Access to local intelligence helps armed groups distinguish between neutral and hostile non-coethnics to target individual opponents while leaving civilians in peace. Conversely, when militias struggle to access local information, they often fall back on ethnicity as a proxy for political allegiance, with bloody consequences. As intelligence capabilities shape the course of sectarian strife, the role of ethnicity can vary even within a particular conflict.

Hägerdal conducted sixteen months of fieldwork in Lebanon, interviewing former militia fighters and commanders and collecting novel statistical evidence. He combines documentation by government agencies, NGOs, local news media, and the United Nations with firsthand narratives by participants to provide an unparalleled account of the processes that generate violence or coexistence when a diverse society descends into armed conflict. Theoretically innovative and descriptively rich, Friend or Foe sheds new light on the logic and dynamics of ethnic violence in civil wars.
War Horse

War Horse

著:マイケル・モルパーゴ

Before the Steven Spielberg film, before the National Theatre production, there was the classic children’s novel…

In the deadly chaos of the First World War, one horse witnesses the reality of battle from both sides of the trenches. Bombarded by artillery, with bullets knocking riders from his back, Joey tells a powerful story of the truest friendships surviving in terrible times. One horse has the seen the best and the worst of humanity. The power of war and the beauty of peace. This is his story.

War Horse was adapted by Steven Spielberg as a major motion picture with Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, and Benedict Cumberbatch. The National Theatre production opened in 2007 and has enjoyed successful runs in the West End and on Broadway.

A great way of introducing young readers to the realities of WWI. Look out for Morpurgo’s other war books including Friend or Foe, Waiting for Anya, King of the Cloud Forests and An Eagle in the Snow.

War Horse is a story of universal suffering for a universal audience by a writer who ‘has the happy knack of speaking to both child and adult readers’ (The Guardian).

Michael Morpurgo has written more than one hundred books for children and won the Whitbread Award, the Smarties Award, the Circle of Gold Award, the Children’s Book Award and has been short-listed for the Carnegie Medal four times.

Michael Morpurgo OBE was born in 1943 in St Albans and was educated at Kings Canterbury, Sandhurst and Kings College London. He taught for ten years in both state and private schools and is married with three children and six grandchildren.

His first book was published in 1975 and he has since published over 100 titles. His books have been translated into over twenty languages. Michael's books have also been adapted for film and the stage, including most recently the National Theatre's enormously successful production of War Horse.

Together with his wife Clare he founded Farms for City Children, an educational charity, in 1976. The organisation now runs three farms welcoming over 3,000 children a year. In 1999 he was awarded an MBE for services to youth, and in 2006 he was awarded an OBE.

His books have won the Whitbread Award (The Wreck Of Zanzibar), the Smarties Book Prize (The Butterfly Lion), the Children's Book Award (Kensuke's Kingdom) and Cercle D'Or Prix Sorciere (King Of The Cloud Forests), the Blue Peter Book Award and the Califonia Young Reader Medal (Private Peaceful), the Independent Booksellers' Book of the Year Award (Alone On A Wide Wide Sea) and several have been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal.

Resurgent Russia in 2030: Challenge for the USAF - Alternate Russian Futures, Political, Economic, and Military Background, Rising Power, Friend or Foe, Implications for the American Military

著:Progressive Management

This excellent report, professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction, is concerned with the direction Russia will take over the next 20 years, its growing influence on the world scene, and the particular challenges it will present to the United States by 2030. The determination that Russia will be an adversary is certainly not a foregone conclusion; however, neither is long-term Russo-American friendship a predetermined outcome. "What is certain is that whatever the intentions of Russia, the United States must be prepared to handle the challenges they may present. Further, the typical Department of Defense (DOD) myopia of focusing primarily on the war of the present may be blinding decision makers to the challenges of tomorrow.

Handling these long-term threats will require forethought and planning. Preparing the US military will require innovative planning, which needs to include the introduction of emerging technologies, dynamic systems, and insightful strategies that can meet the full spectrum of challenges presented by a resurgent Russia. The purpose of this monograph is to provide the background information necessary to establish a priority listing of the types of systems and organizations needed to meet this kind of future threat. The results of this study will be combined with other alternate futures to optimize the mix of systems and strategies for the U.S. Air Force of 2030.

Russia has had a turbulent history, and those experiences have had an indelible influence on the nation as it moved from its tsarist past, through the Soviet interregnum, to its brief flirtation with democracy. These traditions and cultural pressures have instilled in the Russian psyche a belief that strives for stability and seeks strong leadership. Furthermore, Russia tends to value stability and its proclivity for strong leadership even when these traits conflict with those democratic ideals that have become mainstays in the West since the time of the Renaissance and the Reformation. After each change in governance, Russia always returns to form, which is now easy to follow in the Putin era. There is a willing consolidation of power in an authoritarian-style government that is leading Russia back onto the world stage. This resurgent Russia will ultimately become a serious competitor to the United States and over the years could well become a threat.

Artificial Intelligence: Friend or Foe?

Artificial Intelligence: Friend or Foe?

著:Jennifer Jansen

It used to be the stuff of Hollywood movies - but not anymore. Artificial Intelligence is here and it's here to stay. Everywhere we look, AI is there - on the street, in our cars, in our homes, in department stores, online.
What is facial recognition and is it keeping us safe or is it government control? Who are the voices of dissent and why are they speaking out? Can machines do everything humans can do only better? Are we headed towards a new era whereby the dangers outweigh the benefits?
Artificial Intelligence is evolving much faster than expected and is already surpassing what experts believed would be possible at this stage. While it is alarming, and in some instances for good reason, it can also have positive effects. The trick is to ensure we align the AI's goals with our own human goals. If this isn't done, instead of our greatest achievement, we might be facing our ultimate destruction.
